Half-Day Private Tour in Delphi – Arachova & St Loukas Monastery
About this trip
If the Pythia was still alive today, she would probably have predicted your trip to her sanctuary and would have advised you not to miss a visit to one of the most famous sights of ancient Greece. Meet your driver in Athens and start your journey in time by visiting the mysterious site of Delphi once called “The Navel of the Earth” where you will find your licensed guide. Located on the slope of Mount Parnassus, this sanctuary has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in having had a phenomenal influence in the Ancient world. Walking through the ruins you will encounter the imposing theatre from where you can enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding mountains, the fountains of Castalia Spring and the Temple of Apollo where the Pythia (priestess) gave her predictions of the future. It is thanks to the visit of Pausanias to the oracle and his detailed description that archeologists were able to reconstruct the site and place the over three hundred statues into their context. In the Museum of Delphi, you will have the chance to see the unique bronze Charioteer considered to be the top bronze statue exhibited, the Naxian Sphinx and the Statue of Antinoos. Once our guide has transported your minds and hearts into the magical and mysterious ancient Greece, we head back to Athens.
Travelling through the mountains we arrive to the traditional village of Arachova on the hills of Parnassus Mountains, well-known for its handmade carpets and rugs. Take a seat between its beautiful stone houses and narrows streets and taste the local goods.
Our last stop will be at the monastery of St. Loukas, the most important Byzantine monument of the 11th century, located in an altitude of 430m. It is included in the list of World Heritage of Unesco, as it is a model of middle Byzantine art and architecture.
