Offsetting your carbon footprint

The truth is that tourism has also its negative side mainly for the host community. The environmental impact caused by your travelling might be minor, but think about the total impact by all visitors.

Greenhouse gases released from plane during your flights, carbon emissions caused by your local transportation by car or bus, electrical consumption during your stay in the hotel are just some of all the factors that contribute to the total carbon emissions during your holidays. What we all should try to do is to offset those emissions. A carbon offset is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for or to offset an emission made elsewhere.

What can I do as a traveller to offset my carbon footprint?

  • Before you travel check if the company that will operate your trip is eco-oriented. In general show your preference in companies that take initiatives for the environment or can give you the opportunity to help in any way.
  • You can reduce your carbon footprint by making a sustainable use of electricity. In Greece, even though there are a lot of wind turbines placed on the mountains, the biggest amount of electricity is still produced by the combustion of lignite. That means that electrical power is directly correlated with greenhouse gases.
  • Participate in our afforestation program in any way you can. You can donate money, participate physically in the tree planting, or inform others and spread our effort. In doing so, you help in the rebirth of our forests, thus in absorbing CO2 emissions.
  • Most airlines have started being very sensitive about this matter. They give you the chance to offer an amount for offsetting carbon emissions caused by your flight. Choose those airlines for your travel.
